The challenge
Academic publishing runs on a well-known paradox. Universities fund the research, their scientists write and review it largely for free, and then institutions pay again to read it. The margins stay with the publishers. The people who create the value see little of it.
OpenMind’s solution lives in territory many academics find intimidating. The brief covered a verification layer, DOIs anchored to content hashes, hosting at the authors’ own institutions, programmable royalty flows, and an economic model in which part of every subscription is routed into yield-bearing vaults that lower an institution’s costs over time.
Three tensions shaped the project:
- Complexity vs. time. A complete protocol, one minute of screen time.
- Innovation vs. trust. The audience are university leaders, librarians and researchers. Anything that looked like crypto hype would lose them within seconds.
- Abstract vs. visible. Money flows, checksums and governance have no natural look. We had to give them one.
The approach: problem first, technology second
We didn’t start with the blockchain. We started with the frustration every academic recognizes: doing the work, and then paying to access it. Only once that problem is felt does OpenMind enter as the fix.
Technical terms appear only where they earn their place. Everything else is translated into images. The guiding idea became “Science Unlocked”: knowledge that was locked behind paywalls becomes a shared resource again.
The central metaphor: a tree with digital roots
OpenMind’s logo is a tree, so we made it the heart of the film. In our version, the tree grows from roots shaped like circuit traces: a living commons of knowledge, growing on solid digital infrastructure.
The image connects the organic side of the story (science, growth, community) with the technical side (protocol, code) without having to explain either. It also ties the film directly back to the brand.
The look: paper collage instead of neon
Blockchain topics tend to get the same visual treatment: dark backgrounds, glowing lines, floating coins. We deliberately went the other way.
- People as cutouts. Black-and-white photographs of people from the research world, cut out with a white sticker-like border, keep the film anchored in the humans it is for.
- Soft, confident color. Overlapping circles in teal, yellow, purple and green give each scene structure and rhythm, and form a consistent color system across the whole film.
- Paper texture. A subtle paper grain makes everything feel tactile and handmade, closer to a science magazine than a trading app.
The result feels human, credible and a little playful. It works in a university boardroom as well as on social media.
Animated by hand, not generated
Every movement in the film was set by hand. For this project, that wasn’t nostalgia. It was the practical choice:
- Precision for explanation. When a film shows how money moves from an institution to reviewers, authors and back into a vault, timing is the explanation. Hand-set animation let us control exactly what the viewer sees, in what order, and for how long.
- Consistency. Characters, colors and the tree stay the same from the first frame to the last. No drifting faces, no morphing details.
- Character in the motion. Paper elements slide, flip and settle with a slight physicality that matches the collage look. That is what makes the film feel crafted.
Process
- Kick-off: Online meeting to understand the protocol, the audience and the one thing viewers must remember.
- Script: A tight 60-second script, checked with the client for accuracy and clarity.
- Storyboard & style frames: A scene-by-scene visual plan and key frames defining the collage look.
- Animation: Hand-crafted motion design, scene by scene.
- Sound: Voice-over, music and sound design, mixed and mastered.
- Delivery: Full HD master (MP4), cleared for all online channels, organic and paid.
Each phase had its own feedback round, so the client stayed in control without the project losing momentum.
The result
A 60-second film that turns a dense technical brief into a clear story: what’s broken, how OpenMind fixes it, and why it matters. OpenMind can use it wherever it needs to explain itself fast: on its website, in partner and investor conversations, at conferences and across social channels.
What we took away
- Complex topics need fewer ideas, not more. One strong metaphor, borrowed from the logo, did more than a dozen diagrams could.
- Trust is visual. For an audience wary of crypto, the film had to look like science before the voice-over said a word.
- Handmade still matters. At a time when video can be generated in seconds, deliberate hand animation gave this film precision and a personality that fits the brand.
