Story of Adyar

"The Story of Adyar" deals with the environmental problems faced by the Adyar River and traces their causes and backgrounds from the source of the river to its mouth at the Bay of Bengal. Illegal sand mining and the uncontrolled proliferation of industry, along with the enormous growth of the Chennai metropolis, are destroying not only the river but also the livelihoods of the people who depend directly on the river as fishermen or residents.

The documentary also offers insights into the efforts to restore the river on the Adyar Poonga and contrasts them with footage of the 2015 flood disaster in Chennai. The floods submerged large parts of the city and brought life to a complete standstill.

The documentary project was realized in collaboration with the Goethe-Max Mueller Bhavan Institute in Chennai.
